In Boston, take a walking tour of historic sites along the Freedom
Trail; visit world-class museums including the Museum of Fine Arts,
the Gardner Museum, the Institute of Contemporary Art, the Museum
of Science, and the New England Aquarium; stroll down Charles Street
in historic Beacon Hill; or sit at an outdoor café on Newbury
Street, Boston’s version of New York’s Fifth Avenue.
The conference
hotel is about 20 miles from downtown Boston. ThyCa Boston support
group members suggest that you think twice before driving a car into
Boston (or the adjacent cities of Cambridge, Somerville, and Brookline),
for several reasons. Driving in Boston is confusing even for people
who live in the area. Numerous one-way streets make negotiating your
way around the city difficult. Street signs can be confusing, misleading,
or missing. Parking is severely restricted, so you’re likely to end
up in a parking garage that may cost $30 or more for a two-hour stay.
Morning rush hour can last as late as 10 a.m., and the afternoon commute
can start as early as 2:30 p.m., especially on Route 93 and other
major arteries going through the city. More important, however, is
the fact that everything you’ve ever heard about Boston drivers is
true. The typical Boston driver’s goal is to reach his or her destination
in the least possible time, with the fewest possible stops. You haven’t
had the true Boston driving experience until you’ve seen a car take
a left turn from the right lane in front of ongoing traffic—on a red
light. (This is not an exaggeration.)
Boston has excellent
public transportation. If you’re committed to driving, consider parking
the car at an MBTA station outside the city and taking the subway
(also known as the “T”) or a Commuter Rail train. Ask the hotel concierge
for details.
